The growth of shipping flagged or owned in China means that 50.01 percent of all dry bulk shipping is now Asian, according to Intercargo's Benchmarking Bulk Carriers 2010-11. COSCO Shipyard Co., a subsidiary of the COSCO Shipyard Group Co., has delivered a bulk carrier of 57,00DWT, 'APJ Jai', to its Asian buyer. Dry bulk owner Thoresen Thai Agencies confirmed that a group of investors claiming to hold around 30 percent of the total shares in the company had requested that the company remove some of its executives and directors to be replaced by individuals of the group's choosing.
Healthy demand has been giving the dry bulk sector a boost, but stringent regulations are the ones supporting market sentiment. One such regulation is the Ballast Water Management convention, which takes effect from September 8, 2017. In this video, senior managing editor Pradeep Rajan and associate editor Shriram Sivaramakrishnan examine how BWM is affecting the dry bulk market, and give an update on demolition levels as well as secondhand transactions that are also contributing to the market's rebalancing. *** Are we seeing green shoots in the market? An article from Zerohedge points out that this is the biggest drop in 30 years for this part of the year, though even after the drop, rates are still 50% higher than they were at this...
The Capesize, Panamax and Supramax segments have seen freight rates moving in tandem since the beginning of the year. Strong movement of grains, iron ore and steel were the chief driver of the market during the first quarter of the year, while participants expect the freight levels to largely maintain the gains made since the start of the year. In this video, Asia Pacific shipping & freight senior managing editor Pradeep Rajan, editor Andrew Khaw, associate editors Shriram Sivaramakrishan and Jamila Al Ibrahim discuss the current state of the global dry bulk freight market.
Dry bulk freight rates have been depressed for several years, with 2015 turning out to be the lowest point so far. In this edition of Platts Commodity Pulse, Peter Norfolk, editorial director for global shipping and freight and Alex Younevitch, managing editor for EMEA shipping, focus on the Atlantic Panamax market, examining the factors driving price levels for these vessels, often referred to as the workhorses of the dry bulk shipping market, whose key cargoes are coal and grains.
